Moving Day!

Sometimes you can't get a couch out of your old apartment, and since you were going to leave it on the curb anyway...well, you just take a saw to it and cut it in half!


We had a H-O-T, HOT day moving Leyre and her hubby...halfway at least (everyone cross your fingers that the floor guy finishes up in the new place and the gas line is fixed by next weekend!). That's her FIL taking care of the couch for them.

Things I Don't Miss

Remember how we moved the furniture out of my old apartment? This is why. I was riding the elevator on my way in tonight after work thinking "I do not miss those stairs one bit". Folks, if you ever think about moving into a traditional triple decker, just look at this picture for a reminder about why you shouldn't do it.

Baker Lofts

This is the former administration building for the Walter Baker Chocolate Factory, which is now artist lofts. To live in the building you have to be certified by the city as an artist (which means filling out the application and showing them some of your work to prove that you're REALLY an artist and not just Joe Schmoe who want to live in cool places for slightly subsidized rent). The spaces are considered "working/living" spaces, and I'll happily show you their interiors when Dorchester Open Studios rolls around and I can get through their doors!

The Georgian Revival Administration Building of 1918-19, which was designed by George F. Shepard, serves through its prominent siting and angled set-back at 1231 Adams Street, as another major visual focus of the Baker plant. the cube-shaped building with baslustraded flat roof is three stories high and displays a projecting two-story pavilion with a monumental portico and Georgian derived door and window trim executed in stone.

PS - this is NOT the building we live in, although it's likely Pete could get the artist certification if he applied. This building IS, however, part of our complex and managed by the same company as ours.

Moving Day

Moving out of a triple decker means some of your furniture doesn't fit down the stairwell. That's Leyre's husband lower my chair down from the balcony of our (well, not ours anymore!) third floor apartment. Leyre, her husband, and my brother were champs and helped us with the move, which went very smoothly. Now it's just unpacking and figuring out where everything goes....

The Chocolate Factory

You're in for a new batch of locations, folks! Whit has just moved to Back Bay, I'm moving to Dorchester Lower Mills, and Leyre has just started a job in Roslindale. All in Boston, but (with the exception of Back Bay) not places that we've been showing you! Here's the first installment on the chocolate factory front:

Pete and I move TOMORROW (eek!) to an apartment built in one of the Baker Chocolate Factory buildings. There are a number of buildings from the factory still around - some converted to apartments or condos, one a grocery store, one a gym, and one a storage space. There are also some that remain vacant. This photo shows two of the building that are part of the Baker Chocolate Factory apartments. The building on the left is on/over the Neponset River. The green space in the bottom of the picture is part of the landscaped courtyard in the apartment complex. These two buildings house about 80 apartments, and on the other side of the building on the right is our building, which houses another 50 or so apartments (including our awesome studio loft!).
