This dog found a great spot to rest in a doorway on Newbury Street. We spent a few minutes staring at him and he at us...nothing seemed to bother him!

Newbies in Boston

Some Canadian Geese and their goslings seemed to be enjoying themselves in the Charles River despite the incessant rain.

Model Madness

I've walked by plenty of movie sets in Boston but not once have I walked past a photo shoot. This model had a throng of observers as she posed for a photographer in front of the Taj Hotel on Newbury Street.

Sign-tology

The Boston Scientology headquarters are around the corner from our apartment. This sign is on the corner of our block and I never noticed the graffiti on it until a friend pointed it out to me this weekend.

Spring!

It's actually sprung! Remember when I wasn't sure it was ever coming?

This is an old photo, but I went through almost every photo in my (digital) archives this morning* and remembered how much I love it. I took this photo when Whit and I were meeting up for lunch and a photo adventure one afternoon. I thought the clouds looked amazing. I showed it to her when she showed up, and she laughed, pulled out her camera, and showed me these photos she had taken earlier in the day.

That's the Old South Church, a UCC church at the corner of Dartmouth and Boylston in Back Bay. The T sign is for the entrance/exit to the Copley stop on the green line.

On a personal and slightly related note - if you're in Boston and need a good massage, just behind me in this photo, on the 2nd floor, is Boston Bodyworker. See Stephanie, and tell her that Sarah and Whit sent you. You will not regret it.

* Yes, my eyes are very tired and dry right now. I need a break from the computer screen now!

One More

One more from the pillow fight. This guy was in cahoots with the giraffe from yesterday.

Pillow Fight

Saturday was World Pillow Fight Day, and so of course I headed to Copley Square to make sure that you guys got to see some of the action (apparently I really do go for the in depth reporting, George). That's not snow on the ground (thank GOD!), it's the aftermath of the first burst pillow. And that guy in the middle? The giraffe holding the state flag? He's the one that started it all when he ran into the square with a bullhorn on it's siren setting. Click the photo to enlarge, and make note of the other photog in the photo. There were almost as many people there to take photos as there were to pillow fight!

I took a LOT of photos that day - so many that I haven't made it through all of them myself! Luckily for you, there are heaps of photos of the event here, so feel free to check those out. The Tortoise & The Hare

These sculptures are by Nancy Schön, who also sculpted the Make Way For Ducklings statues in the Public Gardens. These guys are next to the fountain in Copley Square - just near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. They were unveiled on the 100th anniversary of the Marathon, in 1996.

In Loving Memory of Ethel Naunton Julian

This is a little garden tucked away at Trinity Church in Copley Square. The name in the subject is on the plaque located on a wall in the garden, but I can't find anything about the garden or Ethel on the website for further info.

On the wall of the walkway through the construction at the Boylston T stop.

Wreath Lover

Yet another place that still has its decorations up after Christmas! I walk by this building all the time and not until the wreaths were put up did I notice how tall and narrow the building is.

Fairy Lights

Here's a shot of all the trees lit up with fairy lights along the middle of Commonwealth Avenue. For those of you unfamiliar with the term fairy lights, many countries use it to refer to white Christmas lights.

Back Bay Station

I've always wondered why the Back Bay T Stop is covered in purple tile - I can't think of another station that has such a random color scheme.

On a side note - I want to send a huge thanks out to Willy from Bromfield Camera in Downtown Crossing. He was very patient with me while I drooled over the Nikon D40x they had in the store, and then super helpful later in the day when I went back to actually buy one. I love it, and hopefully soon I'll figure out exactly how to use it on more than just the auto settings! If you're ever in Boston and in need of help with camera gear, the guys at Bromfield are very knowledgeable and super nice!

All Strung Up!

Yesterday I walked down the middle of Commonwealth Ave. and watched the trees being strung with lights. The lights signal the beginning of the holiday season...as does Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Christmas is here...

...even though Thanksgiving hasn't even come yet! Here's the Boylston St entrance to the Prudential Center all dressed up.

The Lenox

When The Lenox was built in 1900 by the owner of New York's Waldorf-Astoria, it was the tallest building in the city of Boston. Now it sits in the shadows of the Prudential Center,
and has been named by Boston magazine the best place to spot a celebrity for the second year in a row.

Five More Days!

The Marlborough Street Fair was last weekend, to raise money for the John Winthrop School along the street. There were pony rides, a train, bouncey castles, and ambulance to explore, a band to dance to, plenty of snacks...and of course, pumpkins to decorate!
