CDP Theme Day: Water (or "ooooooh! Boston, your my home!")

Today's theme day is water, and I won't lie, it was a tough one for me! That probably sounds silly...we're on a harbor, we've got the Charles River, and it's been rainy for a number of days in the last few weeks. In the end, I'm showing you neither the Harbor or the Charles! This is the Neponset River, which you've seen before (because I live right next to it...sorry to flood you with photos of it. Ba-dum-dum!). The Neponset acts as the city line, running between Boston and Quincy and then Boston and Milton - much like the Charles acts as the city line between Boston and Cambridge. This shot is looking from Boston across the river into Milton Village. The buildings on the left were part of the Walter Baker Chocolate Factory - the nearest is still vacant and the furthest is a storage facility. The building across the street on the right is another Chocolate Factory building, and houses a handful of professional offices, as well as a gym/spa. The trolley stops just past the parking lot for the storage facility, and up the hill are a few banks, a post office, a hardware store, and a few more professional services (tax accountants, dentists, psychologist, etc...).

CDP Monthly Theme Day: Grafitti or Street Mural

This is the mural outside of the Common Ground Cafe, in Dorchester Lower Mills. The Common Ground Cafe serves all organic food and is run by the Twelve Tribes - a Christian community. They have a number of cafe locations throughout the US, including a second MA location in Hyannis (Cape Cod). They have communities throughout the world, including France, Australia, Spain, Canada, Brazil, the UK, Germany, and Argentina. Each of their communities seems to have a business associated with it - cafes, markets selling organic/eco-friendly goods, or a family outfitter. Here's a little blurb from the Twelve Tribes site about their communities:

We live together in households, clans, and tribes, sharing our possessions in common. We strongly support marriage, and we teach our children at home. We dress modestly, eat wholesome food, work hard, pray together, and celebrate our life in music and dance…

Monthly Theme Day: What Your City Is Known For

We, as a group, were contemplating what Boston is known for. I think that's easier for someone that hasn't grown up here to pinpoint, and there were a few suggestions: Fenway/Red Sox, clam chowder, lobsters. In the end, I made the executive decision to skip the seafood (bleah, gross!) and go with Fenway (woohoo!). The rationale was that you mention Fenway and everyone knows you're talking about Boston, but clam chowder and lobster are more regional things (Maine, Cape Cod).

This picture was taken by our friend Emma, who lives in Tucson, AZ, and was in Boston last summer for an internship. I got tickets in my company's box for the game on July 3rd and took her, much to the chagrin of my boyfriend! This is the view of the press boxes and the Fenway sign behind home plate from our seats. Monthly Theme Day: Best Photo of the Year

Maybe this isn't the best photo of the year, but it's easily in my top five favs from the year (I have a hard time choosing favorites!). I couldn't have been more mad at myself when we took this flight path leaving the airport and BOTH of my batteries were dead - what's the point of having a spare if you don't keep it charged, Sarah?? I was lucky enough that we took the same flight path back in when we landed a week later. I say lucky because I've never before and never again taken this flight path. Between the luck of being on the right side of the plane for both flights, the picture quickly became one of my favs because I knew I probably wouldn't have a chance to do it again. But believe you me, I always have my camera in my lap waiting just in case!

CDP Theme Day: Cemetery / Tombstone

This little angel rests on top of a family headstone at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester. I'm not sure what the rocks are all about - I noticed a number of headstones through out the cemetery that had piles of small stones on top of them - some a few spread out, some piles of 6-10 clumped together.

We couldn't resist giving you just one photo, so below is a photo Whit took of the markings on a headstone in one of the burial grounds downtown (the same burial ground where Sam Adams is buried!).


As it turns out, the skull and crossbones are not an atypical grave marking for the Colonial times - it was actually one of the most common found in early New England cemeteries! It is believed that the skull and crossbones can represent the mortality of man, or it can be a symbol of death and resurrection (I guess pirates and angels have something in common?!). On the other hand , it was also used to mark the graves of those who had died of contagious disease as a sign that you shouldn't disturb the grave "lest the disease be awakened".

July 1st Theme: Red!

Something Red....and an introduction! That's me and my boyfriend, Pete. We were car sitting these past few days, so got to go on a few adventures that we can't do without wheels. We headed over to Larz Anderson Park in Brookline to take this unique skyline photo. I like to torture Pete by taking lots of photos of him, so here's our self portrait with the skyline behind us...and since Pete was wearing red... I love this view of the Boston skyline because it's just a peak of the tallest building in town, and it reminds you of how much green space there really is so close to the city.
