Samuel Eliot Morison is a noted historian, a "sailor and a scholar", who was born and raised in Boston. He graduated from Harvard and spent time studying in France before returning to Harvard to complete his PhD. He went on to teach at a number of universities, and also acted as the official historian of the US Navy during World War II.

Happy sunny day?

We've had some nice weather this weekend. The sun stays out for 4-5 hours, and then the grey skies come in and rain comes pouring down for the rest of the day. Just goes to show that what they say about New England weather is true: if you don't like it, wait 15 minutes and it will change!

In the mall that runs down the center of Commonwealth Ave are a number of statues and memorials. This is the Vendome Hotel Memorial - in front of the site of the worst tragedy in the history of the Boston Fire Department.

Boston Sailing Center's open house was this weekend - free sailing if you're willing to wait about ninety minutes for your turn. You do get to cruise around the harbor for about thirty minutes, and it's finally feeling like spring around here. Blue skies, sunshine, and seventy degree weather - that and free sailing makes for a good day!

Red Sox Fever

I went to Fenway Park last night and watched an amazing game between the Red Sox and the Yankees (Sox won!). The Red Sox/Yankees rivalry is renowned in this part of the world and watching the passionate fans is almost as entertaining as watching the actual game...almost. If the Sox keep this up, they might even win the World Series...and then Jordan's furniture will have to follow through on their crazy promotion. Now that would be entertaining!

Readaholics Rejoice!

For all the avid readers out there, you'll understand the joy that only a bookstore can provide. Brookline Booksmith is one of the few remaining independent bookstores in the Boston area and is well worth a visit if you've never been. It's a magical place where hours escape you and your bank balance diminishes...or is that just me?!

Rain Rain Go Away...

No matter what you call the good old rain boots (wellington boots, wellies, gumboots or rubber boots), anyone who owns a pair has been putting them to good use this past week. Everywhere I go I see people wearing them and not once have I seen the same color or pattern. Amazing! This window display is in Coolidge Corner at a little shop called Downtown Shooz. The shop is owned by the nicest man in the world who's brought a smile to my face on the most miserable of days.

Hokie, hokie, hokie, hy!

Boston had a new free daily in town. In my eyes it just means more discarded newspapers on the floor of the T not getting recycled, but I'm both a treehugger and a cynic.

I can't post without commenting on the cover stories. From the minute Leyre told me about the shootings at VA Tech yesterday I haven't stopped thinking about them. A good family friend is a senior there and lost two friends, with another in the hospital in stable condition. I've had Hokies cheers running through my head all day, and keep thinking back to the first time my brother-in-law and sister took me there for a football game - Blacksburg is tiny little college town, tucked into the mountains. Quiet, relaxing, and beautiful. It's a place I've always thought of as a relaxing retreat, and I still struggle to get my head around what happened yesterday. I can't put into words all of the thoughts and emotions that have been running through my mind, but my thoughts are with Brandon and every other student on campus, as well as all of their family and friends. I wish there was never occassion to use the phrase "most deadly massacre in modern American history".
